Meet the Science SuperHeroes!

This weekend is going to be particularly exciting!

For the first time ever, NTU is hosting the Molecular Frontiers Symposium. Very simply put,  it is a get together of the most brilliant minds in the field of molecular science from all over the world!

Molecular Frontiers is an organization that aims to promote the understanding and appreciation of molecular sciences all over the globe, especially among the youth. It’s website states the simple fact “Molecules are everywhere..” to highlight the importance and relevance of this field.

Molecular Frontiers Symposiums are one such platform where the youth of the world get to interact with the brainiest of the brainy! One can hear about their research and the latest developments in the field straight from them and ask any and every question that they have ever wanted to ask these amazing minds in science – what interested them in this field to their pet’s name (I am told).

Well, so NTU will be hosting such a Molecular Frontiers Symposium for the first time ever. Gracing the event with their presence and their lectures are brilliant people – top Professors from top Universities, Noble Prize laureates,   Fellows of various Royal Societies – the list is long.

The fun part (for a few of us) is that the President of NTU, loved our TEDxNTU event so much that he invited us to join the organizing committee  of the  Molecular Frontiers Symposium. Lovely! As always, I took to designing and over the weekend, my friend and I had a website up and running!

Oh! I am not going to trivialize the invited speakers by rattling out their list of names here. Each one deserves much more than that. The invited speakers along with their bio-data and the background of their talk are here. These really are some people whom we, on an ordinary day, can never think of seeing – forget having a chance to hear them and interact with them!

I am surely going for the Symposium – even if it is not my field. If you are anywhere in Singapore, you should come too! Or if you can’t make it, watch the Live Stream! But do not miss this chance to meet the Science Superheroes!

Colours and Silhouettes.

So TEDxNTU is just around the corner and the past whole month has been spent in designing the publicity material for the event. The theme is “The Pursuit of Happiness” and after much head cracking, I finally came up with this-

I aimed to cover the whole spectrum of human emotions while showing that each thing we do in our lives is eventually to reach that elusive happiness. Now, I usally pick designs by standing back and seeing if the design makes me feel good – if it convinces me that it can stand up to the challenge of wordless explanation of the topic. For me,this one really did meet the challenge!

The colours stand for that range of human emotions and goals –  purple for wealth, mystery and royalty; blue for calmness, intelligence and piety; red for passion, courage and wrath; orange for creativity, success and enthusiasm and finally yellow for happiness, intellect and energy. The silhouettes stand for us – the individual falling down but never giving up his quest for happiness.

I am rather happy with the way the whole thing turned out. The background has been created using Smoke Brushes of Photoshop. It was rather simple – download the smoke brushes, ‘Load’ the brushes from the Brushes panel in Photoshop and voila! you are good to go. The effect is rather charming. I limited the use of brushes to fill the background but with a bit of skill, Smudge, Blur and Transform Tool, the smoke can be sculpted to form a definite shape. The final look is rather amazing and it’s not very difficult to do!

Oh and then there’s this amazing video that’s up on all TVs on campus (not made by me). Definitely worth a watch! Here’s the link.

TEDxNTU -The Pursuit of Happiness.

It’s that time of the year again. It’s time for TEDxNTU!!

Honestly, joining TEDxNTU has been one of the best things I have done in NTU. For one: I joined the designing and marketing of TEDxNTU and well that was a wonderful break from engineering. Ok, it’s not that I don’t like engineering. It’s just that I have missed drawing and sketching and creating art for a long time and this was the best way to get back all of that in the time crunched life of an University student. Two: It was good motivation to brush up and learn more about Photoshop. Three: Hosting TEDxNTU means being as closely related to TED as is possible while staying here in Singapore. That is super exciting! It means being in touch with the latest news, ideas, thoughts, technology and innovations from TED. Five: It means getting to meet amazing and unique people in and around Singapore – all those brilliant speakers we invite for TEDxNTU.

The first year, TEDxNTU focused on “Where dreams, ideas and ambitions are powered”. The event was held at the architecturally ADM Auditorium and graced 13 speakers. This was followed by the next event held at Marina Bay Sands with the theme “Ideas lead the way” and fully supported by Ideas.inc.

This year, TEDxNTU is back to its old home – the NTU Campus. The event is to be held on 17th March 2012 at the Lee Kong Chian Lecture Theater, South Spine. The event talks about “The Pursuit of Happiness” and aims to throw light on the elusive and fuzzy mind state we call happiness.

The event has limited entries (like anything good) and registration closes on 5th March. Interested? The link is http://www.tedxntu.com/register.

Two weeks to go! Oh! I am so excited!
